To Kill A Mocking Bird Essays (974 words) - To Kill A Mockingbird

To Kill A Mocking Bird To Kill A Mockingbird Outcasts, they are part of every society, yet they cause no harm. Society outcasts don't choose their status, instead society it self chooses it for them. An outcast is usually the type of person who is different, and because of their oddity they are rejected. Society seems to tend and discard them on grounds that they aren't what society defines as normal. People casted out are considered a threat to the rest of society, because they endanger the, ?normalcy,? that society continuously struggles to obtain. Rejected from society, some of these outcasts will; isolate themselves, despise and torment others, or try to be accepted in to society by doing whatever necessary. They are often taunted, compared, put up with, restricted, and/or penalized by society for being who they are. All they need to survive is their families, shelter, friends, and sometimes the need for a feeling of acceptance. I feel, on the other hand, while people try so hard to perfect there society, they don't realize their own problems which leads to their downfall in the end. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird there were several model people rejected from society in one way or another. Atticus Finch, one of the main characters in the story, was more of an accepted outcast because he was respected, but was still different from the rest of society. Through out the story Atticus was fairly respected and even in some cases a vital part of society because of his knowledge, and skills. He wasn't like the rest of society which left him out of the clique called society. He kept his thoughts and opinions to himself, did no gossiping of others, minded his own business, and treated everyone as an equal to him if not more. I think he was one of the wisest characters in the story as he always took everything into its proper perspective and stood up for what he believed in. He was more of a positive force towards society than a negative, all ways helping when needed. One of his most respected qualities is always being polite and treating people equally despite their social or society status. Although he wasn't like everyone else he didn't need to be, just to be accepted instead he kept to himself and delivered no threat to societies desired normalcy. In the end the outcome of his actions were accepted by society and Atticus was looked up to by some, but still despised by others. Another character was Tom Robinson, a black man, and the time this story was taking place colored people were discriminated against on terms of race. Tom Robinson was very much one of the out casts of society. He had special laws and rules to obide by because he wasn't white, or the preferred race of the society. He was different because of the color of his skin and that scared the society he lived in. He tried his hardest to be respectful and nice to the white people in order to hopefully be accepted. This led to his downfall as he would of, and did, do anything in order to be accepted. I believe he was smart not to disobey, but he should not have done so much for other people just to have the feeling of belonging. I believe if Tom would have been more aware of the positions and situations he was putting him self in, in order to be accepted, then he could have prevented his predicament. Boo Radley, one of the more mysterious characters in the story, never appeared in front of society instead isolated, or instead the society isolated, himself in his house with family. Boo was abnormal, in a retarded form, his family most likely chose to keep him isolated from society, so that he wouldn't have to deal with their harshness and unacceptance. I believe Boo was one of the smartest characters in this novel despite his handicap, if society didn't want to accept him then it was their problem. As shown in the end of the story when Boo made his first appearance he did nothing, but good to society and only if it was realized sooner he could have been a great contribution to society. Boo was a lucky person to not have had to been tormented by society because of his deformities. Bob Ewell was an uneducated derelict of society. He did no good and was despised by everyone. He

Social Behaviors Essays

Social Behaviors Essays Social Behaviors Essay Social Behaviors Essay Shopping can be very addictive especially If you cannot afford it. Over the years, I have been known as a shop-a-holmic. I shop at the mall or online for Just about anything I can afford. I have purchased so many clothes, shoes, and purses until I have no room In my closet for them. My shopping habit first started as a little girl. My mother made sure I had the finest of things wherever I went. As I grew older, I became popular for the way I dressed. I can recall in high school, I was in a fashion show. I wore a brown guess shirt, blue guess Jeans with patches on the front, and blue mix Bally Marinas. My hair appeared to be cut into a long bob that landed near my shoulders. I was not very big on Jewelry or makeup, so I wore a gold medallion name plate with gold hoop earrings, neutral lipstick, and earth tone eye shadow. With the Judges final decision, won second place titled 1989 Best Dressed. At the age of eighteen, I got my first job making my own money. I got approved for credit cards which made my shopping habits increased over the years. When I did not have enough money for purchases, I would Just charge them to my card. As I grew older, I started going to the clubs with old friends from school that we all shared a similar hopping habit! My friends and I would get together and go to the mall Just about every Thursday looking for a new outfit to wear for the weekend. Such behavior from my childhood carried over into my adulthood. My shopping routine developed into a habit that I truly enjoyed. At the end of the day, if I did not have any money, I can always reflect back at the things bought and have to show for my money spent. Over the years, I was so used to buying things I wanted, so as I grew older I tried to break my habit by saving money by bargain shopping. I would travel to Mississippi twice a month with my best friend to shop at Dirt Cheap. This store is considered as a discounted store with very good deals on a variety of items. We would spend our entire day shopping at different locations. I would spend no more than one hundred dollars. Later I developed a pattern whereas I started window-shopping more than purchasing Items. I found myself going to the mall at times walking from store to store wasting time looking around, yet at the same time enjoying myself. I would even surf online browsing from site to site looking at plenty of things I would love to buy. At this point, I found myself shopping less and saving more. According to the Cognitive behavior theory Classical Condition, my behavior developed over the years from becoming accustom to wearing nice things as a child and as I got older buying just about anything I could afford. I thought that if I would be broke with little money to spend, I still had something to show for having no money and that was clothes, shoes, Jewelry, etc. As I grew older I learned to save my by bargain and window shopping. I find myself still shopping yet spending less money and saving more. If I had to apply the Operant Condition theory to change my habit, I would need to first identify my problem so I may have a resolution. By using a positive reinforcement, I could take control of my habit by shopping less and save more money. Once I have created a pattern of saving money and watching my money growing, I will begin to change my behavior of shopping less to save more. My personality reflects as reinforcement by saving more money and given myself rewards by allowing myself to continue bargain shopping. This has proven me to create a win-win situation. I have changed my behavior in ways that I have acknowledge my shopping habit and learn to take control of it. With this, I have been able to satisfy myself by bargain shopping and learning how to save my money wisely. Over the years, I have become impulsive with shopping. I discovered it to be an exciting hobby taking up some spare time. It took me years before I began to change my way of thinking. As an adult, I learned to correct my behavior so that I may save money in return. I succeeded at applying the operant condition to my daily routine, I can implement reinforcements for improvements and reward myself in return. With this, I have save more money than I possibly would have if I would have continued my habit.

Analysis Report Tata Steel of India Research Paper - 1

Analysis Report Tata Steel of India - Research Paper Example The Indian Government has pursued a policy of progressively opening India’s local economy to foreign competition, and there is currently no levy or tax restriction on the import and export of iron and steel products. (India Ministry of Steel, 2009) The consequence of this is considered to be increased competition in the sector, and lower prices, particularly as set by Chinese steel producers for export. China produced over 10 times the steel capacity of India, at 567 million metric tons in 2009 compared to 56.1 million metric tons produced by India in the same period. (India Ministry of Steel, 2010) Nevertheless, Tata Steel has produced a corporate strategy to meet these competitive challenges, and this includes sustainability policies directed at the greater welfare of workers, the environment, and community. This report will review Tata Steel’s sustainability policies as implemented by corporate management to determine the success of these programs and to recommend ch anges that are mutually beneficial to the stakeholders of the company. Tata Steel states publicly that â€Å"the primary purpose of a business is to improve the quality of life of people.† (Tata Steel, 2011) This tenet constitutes the cornerstone of the company’s sustainability policy and represents the wider mandate held by corporate management on behalf of stakeholders. In India, there is a need for social and economic development that uplifts people out of poverty. One of the main processes that enable individuals to improve their living condition in the modern, globalized economy is the possession of a professional, well-paying job. Another factor is the level of education that an individual receives in the formative years of development.

The question is on karen tranberg hansen's book salaula. the world of Essay

The question is on karen tranberg hansen's book salaula. the world of secondhand clothing and zambia - Essay Example The country, which takes its name from the river Zambezi, has been on a path of continual economic decline due to the continuing low worldwide market for copper (the main export of Zambia) and a reduction in the country’s copper reserves. After late 19th century, the flourishing trade in secondhand clothing in the West (in London, a great clothes market rejoiced in the name of ‘Petticoat Lane’) dried up mainly because imports of new clothing from developing countries were easily available and affordable. Of total world exports of secondhand clothing (estimated by the United Nations in 1995 at 1.4 billion, the U.S. being the biggest exporter), about a quarter goes to sub-Saharan Africa. In the early 1990s secondhand clothes were America’s eighth largest export to the region. Britons are known to discard about 1 million tons of old clothes each year: this figure does not include an estimated 200,000 tons of old clothes that are recycled to be worn again or used in the industry. There are two social groups discussed in the book. The first is â€Å"Rainbow Children’s Hospice† in Leicester in the U.K that raises funds for charity. The second is â€Å"Scope†, an organization in the U.K to help people with cerebral palsy. Scope has about 900 clothes banks in the U.K; 760 of them are owned directly by it; the balance 140 are owned by sub-dealers (such as Ragtex U.K located in Ashby-da-la-Zouch) licensed to use the Scope name. Each sub-dealer donates  £100 a year to Scope’s charity fund. Dana Simons, the owner of the blouse that makes the historic journey in the novel, is a high school teacher who teaches home economics, food and nutrition in a school in Leicester. Dana is also a professional fundraiser at the Rainbow Children’s Hospice in the same city. Gerald Commel is the Managing Director of Ragtex U.K, sub-dealer of Scope’s clothes banks, which operates a textile recycling plant

President Theodore Roosevelt Essay Example for Free

President Theodore Roosevelt Essay Theodore Roosevelt was an asthmatic, nearsighted, shy and physically weak child who later on became one of the most powerful Presidents of the United States. His leadership style was tough, yet his charisma kept him in the circles of smart people. His communication skills were popular among the masses but his tough leadership style was disliked by his fellow republicans. His leadership was considered too domineering by them. Although, much before succeeding as the President, he was the president of the board of New York Police commissioners. During his two years as its presidents, he radically transformed the organization. With his iron-will and honesty, he brought major reforms to the organization and saved its tainted image. His style of working with others was tough and usually liked to take unilateral decisions, yet his major decisions proved correct Theodore Roosevelt had a very ambitious personality.   He took up sports as diverse as boxing, hiking, horseback riding, and tennis. In his childhood, he was hyperactive and rather mischievous and was an excellent conversationalist (Thayer, 1919). He was an avid reader. He chose to lead a strenuous life despite the fact that his doctors advised him to find a desk job.   All these aspects of his personality later reflected in his life as a leader. His ambitious personality helped him overcome his physical abilities to become a powerful masculine figure and later became one of the most robust and ambitious U.S presidents. His hyperactive personality was later instrumental in his success as he became an activist and a reformer. His excellent communication skills helped him in his election campaign as it captivated the masses.   Above all, his personality aspect of being tough and leading a strenuous life was one of the prime reasons that he rose from being a timid boy to becoming among the most powerful U.S presidents (Morris, 2001). Issues that engaged my emotions Theodore Roosevelt had a poor state of health. From his physical condition, one could only infer that he would later end up finding a desk job and leading a normal life. But since his childhood, he had great ambitions. He worked out in gymnasium to improve his physical health and took up boxing to deal with bullies (Thayer, 1919). His memorable fight at Harvard is a testament of how hard work helped him achieve something others won’t expect of him (Thayer, 1919). I feel emotionally engaged with these issues because it would have taken him great pains to overcome his physical state, which was probably the reason for him being shy in childhood, to become a great man in history. The death of his mother and wife on the same day, both very dear to him, was also one of the issues I felt emotionally engaged with. His recovery from this great loss was an evidence of the strength of his personality and his emotional stability. Though, Theodore Roosevelt was awarded a Noble Peace prize for his efforts to end Russo-Japanese wars, he was equally eager to wage war with any country to test the naval supremacy of the U.S. I disagree with his hawkish stance when he disclosed his desire to fight war with any country. I also disagree with his position on racism. He was also a racist and seriously doubted the loyalties of Irish-American and German-American and termed them unpatriotic. No doubt, Theodore Roosevelt was an important historical figure. But there have been instances when his motives seemed to me more inclined towards personal gains rather than being towards national interest. He sought to give the President wide ranging authority and thus extended the president’s powers. He considered the president the sole authority to make decisions and in the process undermined the judiciary to some extent. He split his party and even split with his friend William Howard Taft, who was Roosevelt’s candidate for presidency (Morris, 2001). I am also critical of some of his actions. He was responsible for splitting his party and did not succeed in getting the loyalties of his fellow republicans, which was mainly due to their reservations about his domination of the party politics.   He was also responsible for establishing a temporary colonial rule over the Dominican Republic in 1905 and Cuba in 1906 (Morris, 2001). Instead of supporting President Wilson’s pledge of neutrality during World War 1, he became one of its biggest critics. If I were in place of President Theodore Roosevelt, I would have adopted a dovish approach to the problems of that time. I would have tried to ensure that fellow republicans have been taken into confidence on all major decisions, a step that could have proved useful for the President in his future campaigns. Instead of a hawkish approach towards enemies in World War 1 after the presidency, I would have supported the strategy of President Wilson. References Morris, Edmund (2001). The main paper -- Essays Papers

The main paper In response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001, there has been renewed interest in the creation of a national identification system, typically embodied in a "smart" ID card, as a component of a national counter-terrorism strategy. National ID cards have been advocated as a means to enhance national security, unmask potential terrorists, and guard against illegal immigrants. "The core issue can be expressed as a question: What actions should the federal government take to certify the identity of its citizens and other persons in its jurisdiction, and what role should computing technology play in that process? To deal with questions like this, lawmakers, leaders, and government agencies often begin the policymaking process by seeking the advice of expert panels"(CSC4735 Forum). In overall, there are many opinions that people agree with the national ID card; also many of them disagree with it too. In my opinion the national ID card system would not protect us from terrorism, but it would create a system of internal passports that would significantly diminish the freedom and privacy of law-abiding citizens. Larry Ellison, head of Oracle Corporation, the California based software company, has called for the development a national identification system and offered to donate the technology to make this possible. He proposed ID cards with embedded digitized thumbprints and photographs of all legal residents in the United States (Black). In recent ideas, ID cards have been linked to national registration systems, which in turn form the basis of government administration. In such systems the ID card becomes merely one visible component of a much larger system, with the advent of magnetic stripes and microprocess... ...debates over health are reform, the Clinton Administration also constantly stressed that it was opposed a national identifier. In 1999 Congress repealed a controversial provision in the Legal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, which gave authorization to include Social Security Numbers on drivers' licenses. For conclusion, there are some reasons that discussed in this paper. I think the national ID card system would not protect us from terrorism, but it would create a system of internal passports that would significantly diminish the freedom and privacy of law-abiding citizens. So now imagine this. A police officer stops you in your car. Scan your license, matches your fingerprint with a central database and has immediate access to a plethora of information, including whether you are on a terrorist watch list. What would you think?

Impact of Economic Growth and Employment Rate on Inflation Essay

The public sector has used a mix of policies to control inflation, and it is also held responsible for its creation. The consumer price index (CPI) increased over 11 percent in 1981-82, and over 12 percent in 1990-91. Similarly, sensitive price index (SPI) increased over 15 percent in 1981-82, and over 12 percent in 1990-91. The GDP deflator was also double-digit for several years. Inflation not only affects sectoral allocation and distribution of income but also generates poverty. Several supply side and demand side factors could be responsible for this surge in inflation. Inflation can be a result of shocks to the supply of certain food items and to world oil markets. Rising oil prices can pose risk of increase in prices of almost all other commodities of the consumer basket. Such supply-side shocks are very volatile and can cause large fluctuations in food and oil prices. The effects of this on overall inflation at times can be so excessive that these cannot be countered through demand management, including monetary policy. However, greater emphasis in the recent debate on inflation remained on the demand side factors. The demand side pressures were often considered as an outcome of the September 11, 2001 incident in the United States of America (USA) and a combination of expansionary monetary and fiscal policies. First, increased domestic demand due to remittances from abroad and liberal demand-management policies outpaced the domestic production, creating a positive output gap, which in turn put upward pressure on prices. A recently conducted survey by the PIDE on inflation expectations reveals that people are expecting high inflation together with high unemployment, a decline in growth rate and decreasing currency value.
